Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram has invited various Singaporean companies to explore and extract oil and gas in Bangladesh’s coastal areas, including Bhola.
He made the invitation on Monday (November 2) when Singapore’s Non-Resident High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Derek Loh, paid a courtesy call on him at the Speaker’s office in the Parliament Building.
Hafiz Uddin said that relations between Bangladesh and Singapore are very warm and friendly, and Singapore is one of Bangladesh’s important economic partners.
He further said that the authoritarian regime came to an end through the July Mass Uprising of 2024, paving the way for the resumption of the country's democratic journey.
He also remarked that the 13th parliamentary election was one of the freest, most acceptable and fairest elections in the country's history.
The Speaker alleged that the country's economic progress had been hampered during the 17 years of authoritarian rule.
He expressed hope that Singapore could play an important role in Bangladesh's investment process.
On the other hand, High Commissioner Derek Loh said that technical education should be given priority in Bangladesh's educational institutions.
He observed that ensuring the employment of the country's young and capable workforce would be possible through improving and expanding the quality of technical education.
He also said that Singapore has been strengthening its economy through shipbuilding and the construction of various types of vessels. Bangladesh, too, could benefit economically by expanding its shipbuilding industry and establishing dry docks.
Both sides exchanged views on investment and trade between the two countries, the expansion of the ready-made garment industry, exchanges of parliamentary visits, the activities of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, improvement of educational standards, public examinations and recruitment examinations for government jobs.
