Ongoing war gets Asian Cup postponed

Concerns had been raised due to the war, and ultimately, those fears have proven true: the 2027 AFC Asian Cup has been postponed. The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has confirmed this development, announcing that the tournament, set to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, will now take place approximately one year later than originally scheduled.

According to the new schedule, this premier Asian football competition will begin on December 23, 2027, and conclude on January 21, 2028.

The unique situation in the Middle East and recent events has created challenges regarding travel and essential logistics, prompting the AFC to adjust the schedule.

This decision follows extensive discussions between the AFC, the tournament’s local organizing committee, and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation. The AFC’s Competitions Committee approved the new schedule, taking into account the interests of participating teams, officials, fans, and all other stakeholders.

In a statement, the AFC noted that, given the current circumstances, hosting the tournament according to the original schedule had become increasingly difficult. The new dates will be submitted to FIFA for approval, and further updates will be communicated through the AFC’s official channels.

The AFC commended the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the local organizing committee for their commitment to the tournament’s preparations. The organization stated that it will continue to coordinate with them to ensure an event that reflects the prestige of Asian football.
