The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formed a five-member independent committee, led by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Rashna Imam, to receive complaints of sexual harassment and abuse and help ensure a safe and respectful environment for women cricketers.

The board has kept the committee free of anyone affiliated with the BCB, aiming to maintain independence in receiving and investigating complaints.

Rashna Imam previously served as a member of the convener committee led by Tamim Iqbal before the BCB’s latest election. She also headed the board’s Women’s Wing during that period.

The other members of the committee are Barrister Nazia Kabir, Barrister Anita Ghazi Rahman and Zarin Mahmud Hossain. A former cricketer will also be included, although the name has yet to be finalised.

Those involved in the initiative believe that excluding BCB affiliates will help prevent internal influence and conflicts of interest during investigations. It is also expected to allow women cricketers to share their complaints and experiences more freely.

Women’s Wing chief Rafiqul Islam said, there had long been a demand for such a committee, adding that any cricketer could approach it to raise concerns.

Allegations of sexual harassment have surfaced in Bangladesh women’s cricket before. Former national team captain Jahanara Alam had accused a member of the team management of sexual abuse. Following the allegation, the BCB formed an investigation committee and announced plans to strengthen institutional safeguards in line with a 2009 High Court Division verdict on the formation of complaint committees.

At the time, BCB director and then head of the Women’s Wing Committee Rubaba Dowla led the investigation committee. Besides investigating the allegation, the committee was tasked with creating an independent environment for complaints and introducing mandatory awareness training to ensure a safe and respectful workplace in Bangladesh cricket.

Through the latest initiative, the BCB expects women cricketers to be able to report harassment or other unwanted experiences without fear, hesitation or pressure.
