The government has announced plans to distribute 10 million pairs of spectacles, perform one million cataract surgeries and bring around 20 million people under eye healthcare services through an expanded national referral system by 2030.

State Minister for Health Dr MA Muhit announced the commitments in a video address at the World Eye Health Summit on Tuesday (November 3).

The global summit is being organised by the government of Antigua and Barbuda in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and international development partners, with Bangladesh serving as a co-host.

The state minister said preventable blindness and visual impairment were not only humanitarian concerns but also had significant negative impacts on society and the national economy.

He stressed that good vision was essential for children's physical and mental development, human resource development, increased national productivity and enabling citizens to realise their full potential.

Highlighting Bangladesh's position and five-year plan at the summit Muhit said, the government, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, had made eye health protection a national priority.

As part of the commitment, the National Eye Health Action Plan will be implemented for the 2026-2030 period.

Under the plan, the government has set a target of bringing 20 million people under eye healthcare services through an expanded referral system by 2030. It also aims to distribute 10 million pairs of spectacles to address vision problems and successfully perform one million cataract surgeries within the same period.

In his video address Muhit said, ensuring eye examinations for every citizen and building a Bangladesh free from preventable blindness were national commitments.

He said, the government would continue working through the national health system to prevent blindness and visual impairment, raise awareness and curb their spread.

The state minister also expressed the government's commitment to working jointly with national and international non-governmental development organisations and development partners to ensure universal access to eye healthcare.
