MPO-enlisted teachers and employees have issued an ultimatum to the government regarding three core demands: the immediate issuance of transfer orders, salary and allowances under the ninth pay scale, and 100 per cent festival allowances starting from the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
They warned of announcing tough agitation programs if their demands are not met by December 30.
Principal Delawar Hossain Azizi, Member Secretary of the MPO Education Nationalisation Aspirants' Alliance, issued the ultimatum during a press conference at the Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club on Wednesday morning (November 4).
Reading a written statement, Principal Azizi stated that over 600,000 MPO-enlisted teachers and staff across Bangladesh have been awaiting the implementation of these demands for a long time. He emphasized that many teachers currently serve hundreds of kilometres away from their families, making the immediate issuance of transfer orders essential to mitigate their hardships.
Principal Azizi welcomed a recent move by the Ministry of Education, which sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance on November 1 seeking fund allocations to provide salaries and allowances for MPO-enlisted school and college teachers under the ninth pay scale. He called on the government to swiftly initiate similar fund allocation measures for madrasa and technical education teachers.
He further noted that MPO staffs currently receive only 50 per cent of their basic salary as a festival allowance, demanding that this be raised to 100 per cent starting from the next Eid-ul-Fitr.
The alliance leader explained that the group opted for a press conference instead of a sit-in demonstration in front of the Press Club after considering the overall security environment and teachers' safety.
However, he stressed that the movement has not been called off, warning that failure to take effective steps toward meeting their demands by December 30 will force the alliance leadership to announce strict protest programs.
