Former Australia batter Mike Hussey has joined the national team's coaching staff as a consultant, turning down an informal offer from England to help strengthen Australia's batting ahead of major tournaments.

Cricket Australia confirmed his appointment on Friday. The 51-year-old will work with the team during this month's T20 series against England and the four-Test series against New Zealand.

His appointment comes after Australia lost a three-Test series 2-1 to South Africa, exposing weaknesses in their batting. Hussey will also help prepare the team for the 2027 Ashes and ODI World Cup, as well as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and T20 World Cup.

Hussey, known as 'Mr Cricket', previously worked with England's coaching staff during their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph and served as Chennai Super Kings' batting coach. Australia head coach Andrew McDonald welcomed his return, citing his experience across formats and international competitions.
