US President Donald Trump has appointed his longtime advisor Stephen Miller as the new White House Chief of Staff, signaling a potential shift towards a more hardline administrative stance.

Announcing the decision on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday (6 November), Trump referred to Miller as one of his most trusted advisors. Miller, 41, is scheduled to assume the role on Monday, replacing outgoing Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Miller is widely recognized as a key architect behind the Trump administration's hardline anti-immigration policies and mass deportation plans. His appointment comes in the wake of the Republican Party's major losses in the mid-term elections, with Democrats set to assume control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in January, raising expectations of increased congressional scrutiny over the administration.

As Chief of Staff, Miller will oversee the Executive Office of the President, manage White House staff and scheduling, direct administrative policymaking, and regulate access to the President.

Often referred to as the "gatekeeper" of the presidency, the role is vital in coordinating communication between the President and executive branch agencies.
