A tourist remains missing after being swept away by strong waves while trying to push a grounded tour boat in the Dublar Char area of the Sundarbans under Sharankhola range, local authorities reported.
The incident occurred at around 1:00PM on Friday (November 6). Search and rescue operations conducted jointly by the Forest Department and the Coast Guard had not located the missing tourist as of latest reports.
The missing tourist was identified as Riaz Ahmed (27), a resident of Kathali West Para in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district.
According to the Forest Department, Riaz obtained a three-day travel permit from the Sundarbans West Forest Division in Khulna and paid necessary revenue at the Kadamtala Forest Station under the Satkhira range. He was traveling alongside three companions in a group of 19 tourists aboard a vessel carrying visitors from Narsingdi, Mymensingh, and Gazipur.
The tour vessel, named 'Mizanur Rahman Ecotourism-2' (BLC Number: 26270806004), commenced its journey into the Sundarbans on November 5.
Sundarbans Satkhira Range Assistant Conservator of Forests Shahinur Rahman explained that the tour boat became stuck on a newly emerged shoal in the Dublar Char area.
"Several enthusiastic tourists disembarked from the boat into the water to help push it free," Rahman said. "When those efforts failed and they attempted to climb back aboard, a sudden surge of waves swept four individuals away."
While three of the tourists were successfully rescued, Riaz Ahmed could not be recovered. Forest Department personnel and Coast Guard units are continuing joint search operations to locate him.
