India's Virat Kohli surpassed Australian great Ricky Ponting to become the highest run-scorer against New Zealand in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) during the second match of the series in Wellington on Saturday.
Kohli went past Ponting's previous record of 1,971 runs by hitting a boundary off his second delivery. Ponting had reached the tally in 51 innings, while Kohli needed only 38.
However, Kohli could not extend his innings, scoring seven runs off seven balls before being dismissed by New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy. He now has 1,978 ODI runs against the Black Caps.
India's Sachin Tendulkar sit third on the list with 1,750 runs in 42 matches, followed by Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara with 1,568 runs.
Meanwhile, New Zealand were bowled out for 134 after batting first. India chased the target and secured a four-run victory under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
