Over 30 lakh taxpayers file online returns so far this fiscal: NBR

More than 30 lakh taxpayers have filed their income tax returns online so far in the current fiscal year, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
In a press release issued on Tuesday (December 30), the NBR said over 30 lakh taxpayers have already submitted e-returns, while around 45 lakh taxpayers have completed registration on the e-return system.
The latest update reflects a steady rise in taxpayer participation, driven by government initiatives aimed at simplifying the tax system and making it more taxpayer-friendly through digital platforms, the revenue authority said.
According to NBR data, 2,51,784 taxpayers filed e-returns in August 2025, followed by 3,01,302 in September, 4,54,076 in October, 10,40,472 in November, and nearly 10 lakh taxpayers so far in December. During the same period last year, only 10,02,298 taxpayers had filed e-returns, which is significantly lower than the current year, highlighting a sharp increase in online tax compliance.
To facilitate taxpayers, the government has extended the deadline for submitting income tax returns to January 31, 2026. The NBR expressed optimism that more than 40 lakh taxpayers will file e-returns within the extended timeframe in the current fiscal year.
The online return filing facility has also been kept open for Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad. Although e-return submission is not mandatory for expatriates, they can apply by providing their passport number, national identity card number and email address to [email protected]. Upon application, an OTP and registration link are sent to the applicant's email, enabling overseas taxpayers to register and submit income tax returns online.
Similarly, authorised representatives of taxpayers are also allowed to submit returns online during the current tax year, the NBR added.
