4 banned AL men detained, crude bombs explode

Police detained four individuals during an attempted flash procession under the banner of the banned Awami League in the capital’s Mohakhali area on Tuesday (August 11).

When officers moved to arrest other participants, they detonated crude bombs and fled the scene, police said.

The incident occurred around 1:30PM, according to Banani Police Station.

Police identified the detainees as outlawed Bangladesh Chhatra League activists from Government Bangla College Aslam Miah, 25, and Ashikul Islam, 24, alongside Awami League activists Mahfuzur Rahman Siam, 19, and Monir Hossain, 48.

Banani police sources said around 30 to 40 individuals gathered under the banner of Awami League Dhaka North near Muktijoddha Gali and the CM Pump adjacent to the Institute of Public Health in Mohakhali.

As they prepared for a flash procession, local residents intercepted them and severely beat one activist before handing him over to the Mohakhali Terminal Police Outpost. Police subsequently detained three others with help from local residents. As officers tried to apprehend the remaining participants, they exploded crude bombs and ran away.

Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Faridul Islam told Prothom Alo that activists of the banned Awami League arrived in CNG auto-rickshaws to hold a sudden procession.

"Four individuals were detained from the spot. The others detonated multiple crude bombs while escaping. The individual beaten by the mob is receiving primary medical treatment," he said.

Police said preparations were underway to file a case over the incident.
