The Jatiya Party (JAPA) suspended all events planned for the celebration of its 40th founding anniversary amidst nationwide mourning and public holidays following the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
JAPA Chairman's Press Secretary Shaurja Deepto Surja confirmed on Wednesday, December 31, that "on the instructions of party chairman GM Quader, all programmes organized nationwide on the occasion of the party's 40th founding anniversary have been postponed tomorrow, Thursday, January 1, due to the three-day state mourning period on the death of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia."
The government has declared a three-day state mourning period, spanning Wednesday to Friday, December 31 to January 2, following the passing of Khaleda Zia. A general holiday on Wednesday underscored the solemnity of the occasion and prompted political parties and organizations across the country to adjust their programs in observance of the national bereavement.
Begum Khaleda Zia passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, December 30, after a prolonged illness. She had been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since November 23, a period of 37 days during which medical teams closely monitored her condition. Her death represents a significant political moment, given her stature as BNP Chairperson and a former head of government, and has prompted a nationwide response across political, administrative, and public spheres.
The government's declaration of a three-day mourning period carries legal and administrative weight, enforcing national protocols for state observances and mandating the temporary suspension of routine political and cultural activities. Observers note that the suspension of JP's anniversary programs reflects adherence to formal political etiquette and respect for the constitutional and ceremonial norms associated with state mourning.
