LALMOHON, BHOLA, Jan 11: Serious allegations of irregularities have surfaced in the construction of an Ashrayan centre in Lalmohon Upazila of the district.
The government initiated the project to provide shelter during disasters for residents of Char Shahjalal, a remote island that emerged in the Tentulia River under Paschim Char Umed Union.
Locals claim that expired cement, substandard bricks, rods and locally sourced sand are being used in the construction of the vital facility. With the deadline approaching, the contractor is reportedly rushing to finish the work day and night using poor quality materials. Residents fear the centre could collapse during a cyclone or tidal surge, turning a supposed safe haven into a death trap.
According to official sources, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief allocated Tk 2.50 crore for the project in its final phase. The construction contract was awarded to Idris Ali Construction, with a completion deadline set for December 2025.
Md Sabuj, a resident of Char Shahjalal, said, "This centre is meant to save lives and livestock during floods and cyclones. But inferior materials are being used, and work is being carried out at night."
Another resident, Md Nazim, alleged, "There are widespread irregularities. Due to poor monitoring, the contractor is cutting corners. We demand proper supervision; otherwise this long-awaited centre will become a death trap instead of a safe shelter."
When contacted over phone, Fazlul Kabir, manager of Idris Ali Construction, avoided questions about the use of substandard materials and abruptly disconnected the call, leaving no official comment available.
Lalmohon Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Shah Aziz said, "If we receive written complaints, we will investigate and take necessary action."
Bhola District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Azim Uddin added, "We were not aware of irregularities earlier. Now that we have learned of them, we will visit the site soon and take appropriate measures."
