Metro rail to open extended route up to Kamalapur in Jan next year

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMCTL) which operates the metro rail service in the capital is expected to launch its extended service up to Kamalapur station on the new year’s day next year, officials said on Tuesday.

“We have completed 69 percent of works to extend the 1.16 km length of MRT Line-6 line from Motijheel to Kamalapur,” DMCTL Managing Director Faruque Ahmed said.

He said the Kamalapur section or station was expected to be opened for commuters on January 1, 2027 as works towards that end was being carried out in full swing.

DMCTL officials said as of December 2025, all 177 piles, pile caps, piers and station columns have been completed by December 2025.

They said construction of the station’s concourse roof, platform slabs, precast parapet walls, steel roof structure and steel erection were completed while 25 out of 27 spans were lifted by now.

Moreover, they said, 2800 square meters of brick wall and plaster work at the concourse level.

According to the officials they were now focused on activities including agreements for installing electrical and mechanical systems.

The total length of the MRT Line-6 line is 21.26 kilometres from Uttara’s Diabari or Uttara North to Kamalapur.

The midway stations are Uttara Centre, Uttara South, Pallabi, Mirpur 11, Mirpur 10, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh, Dhaka University, Bangladesh Secretariat, Motijheel and Kamalapur.

Commercial operation of the country’s maiden metro rail from Uttara to Motijheel began in November 2023.

Now the first train leaves Motijheel station at 7 AM and the last train at 10:10 PM. On the other side the first train leaves Uttara Uttar station at 6:40 PM and the last one at 9:30 PM.
