Symbols allotted to 47 candidates in eight Tangail seats

TANGAIL, Jan 22: Symbols have been allotted among 47 contending candidates for the eight parliamentary seats in Tangail ahead of the upcoming 13th national election. 

District Returning Officer Sharifa Haque allotted the symbols to all candidates, including those from parties and independents, on Wednesday afternoon.

Upon receiving their symbols, some candidates left the District Returning Officer's office in processions with their workers and supporters. The candidates will formally begin their campaign activities from tomorrow (Thursday).

District Senior Election Officer Muhammad Tajul Islam stated that symbols have been allotted to the candidates for their respective constituencies. Having received their symbols, the candidates have returned to their electoral areas. Formal election campaigning will commence from Thursday.

It is disclosed that 65 candidates submitted nomination papers for the eight parliamentary seats in Tangail District. After scrutiny, the District Returning Officer rejected the nomination papers of 28 candidates. Later, 18 candidates successfully appealed to the Election Commission and regained their candidacy. On the last day for withdrawal, Tuesday, nine candidates withdrew their nomination papers.

BNP expels three rebel candidates 
Three individuals, including the Tangail District BNP's secretary general and a former state minister, have been expelled for engaging in activities contrary to the party's principles, ideals, and discipline.

The expelled members are: Advocate Farhad Iqbal, Tangail District BNP Secretary General; former adviser to the BNP chairperson and former state minister Lutfar Rahman Khan Azad; and BNP Executive Committee Member Advocate Mohammad Ali.

This information was disclosed in a press release signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Wednesday night.
