The Director General of Directorate General of Medical Education (DGME) Prof Dr Nazmul Hossain has said that female students outperformed their male counterparts in medical college entrance examinations last year.

He said that 63 per cent of successful candidates were female, while 36 percent were male, indicating that girls are ahead of boys in academic merit.

He further said these talented women are mothers, sisters and wives, yet they face a higher risk of breast cancer. "Breast cancer is one of the world's deadliest diseases. In 2022, 672,000 people died from the disease, most of them women," he said.

He made these remarks at the inauguration of a free breast screening camp for DRU female members and their families organized at the Shafiqul Kabir Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity on Thursday.

Dr Nazmul further said that within the next three years, the overall infrastructure of Dhaka Medical College would undergo a major transformation and be developed with state-of-the-art facilities. He stressed the need to upgrade all medical colleges across the country. Soon 10 old medical colleges and 19 hostels would be modernised, enabling 8,900 students to live there safely.

He also noted that the trend of breastfeeding among children has declined, posing health risks for women. "Even religion encourages breastfeeding. Women represent society and the nation. Therefore, women must exercise regularly, avoid obesity and reduce body weight. Only then can the risk of disease be reduced," he said.
