A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced Asif Shikdar to death and fined him Tk 50,000 for murdering his friend, Manarat International University student Nasim Ahmad Emad Uddin, over a trivial dispute in 2017.
Dhaka’s Seventh Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Tawhida Akter delivered the verdict. Asif, who has been absconding, was also issued an arrest warrant.
According to the case documents, Nasim was stabbed by Asif on November 6, 2017, in East Badda following an altercation over a dispute the previous night. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Nasim’s father filed a murder case with Badda Police Station the same day, naming Asif and two others along with several unidentified people.
Police later submitted a charge sheet against Asif, while the other two accused were recommended for discharge for lack of evidence.
The court framed charges against Asif in January 2022. Of 20 prosecution witnesses, 14 testified during the trial.
