A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the seizure of land and flats owned by Shahreen Akter Shilpi, wife of Syed Abed Ali Jibon, a former driver of an ex–Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman implicated in the PSC question paper leak scandal.
The order, issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Sabbir Foyez following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), covers 148 decimals of land and two flats registered in Shilpi’s name, valued at Tk 16.33 million.
The court also ordered the freezing of a car worth Tk 3.3 million and four bank accounts in her name.
ACC Deputy Assistant Director Jakir Hossain told the court that investigators had found evidence of assets acquired beyond known sources of income and that there was a risk of those assets being transferred or disposed of potentially hampering the investigation.
On January 5, the ACC filed three cases against Abed Ali, his wife and their son, Syed Sohanur Rahman Siyam, on charges of amassing illicit wealth.
According to the case statements, Abed Ali allegedly conducted suspicious transactions worth about Tk 412.9 million through 12 bank accounts and acquired Tk 37.3 million in undisclosed assets. His wife is accused of amassing Tk 12.66 million in illegal wealth and conducting suspicious transactions totaling Tk 35.64 million through two bank accounts. Their son faces allegations of acquiring Tk 33 million in assets beyond known income.
