Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) accorded a special reception to HAMS Garments Limited for achieving the world's highest score as a green factory.
The reception was organised at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara on Saturday through a joint initiative of BGMEA and HAMS Garments Limited.
BGMEA Senior Vice-President Inamul Haq Khan formally handed over a commemorative crest to Engineer Shafiqur Rahman, Managing Director of HAMS Garments Limited, in recognition of the company's outstanding achievement, said a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, Inamul Haq Khan said HAMS Garments Limited has set a new world record by scoring 108 out of 110 points under the USGBC LEED Platinum Certification, which is currently the highest score achieved by any green factory in the world.
"This achievement is not merely about numbers; it represents the highest level of sustainability performance globally," he said, adding that the success has elevated the prestige and capability of the 'Made in Bangladesh' brand on the world stage and created a new global benchmark for the country's apparel sector.
BGMEA Vice-President (Finance) Mizanur Rahman, Directors Faisal Samad, A.B.M. Samsuddin, and Faruque Hassan were present at the programme, alongside Managing Director of HAMS Garments Engineer Shafiqul Rahman, USGBC Consultant Ananta Ahmed, Interim Committee Convener of the Institution of Textile Engineers and Technologists (ITET) Engineer Ehsanul Karim Kaiser, and senior officials and directors of HAMS Garments.
In his welcome speech, BGMEA Director Faisal Samad congratulated HAMS Garments on its remarkable accomplishment, stating that achieving a score of 108 out of 110 is an extraordinary challenge that the factory has successfully overcome. He also emphasised the need to make access to the Green Technology Fund easier to accelerate environmentally friendly transformation in the industrial sector.
BGMEA Director Faruque Hassan noted that Bangladesh has been consistently breaking its own records by achieving the highest scores in LEED certification over the past decades, significantly enhancing the image of the industry. However, he pointed out that although green factories receive priority in work orders, the appropriate price premium for sustainable production is yet to be adequately reflected.
USGBC Consultant and Managing Director of 360 TSL Ananta Ahmed highlighted the technical aspects behind the achievement. He said Bangladesh is not only continuing its journey towards sustainability but is also setting new global benchmarks in green industrial development.
It was mentioned that Bangladesh currently has 273 LEED-certified green factories, including 115 Platinum and 139 Gold rated units. Of the world's top 100 highest-rated green factories, 69 are located in Bangladesh.
Addressing the event, Managing Director of HAMS Garments Limited Engineer Shafiqur Rahman shared the factory's success story and expressed gratitude for the recognition. He praised the BGMEA board for valuing and showcasing the industry's achievements on the global platform, adding that such initiatives would inspire entrepreneurs to take bolder steps towards sustainable industrialisation.
HAMS Garments Ltd, located in Sreepur of Gazipur, secured Platinum certification under the LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4 rating system after scoring 108 points, the highest score recorded worldwide so far under this category.
