AL leader held in Ashulia over attack on retd army man’s house

Police have arrested an Awami League leader from Ashulia in connection with a case involving repeated attacks, vandalism and arson at the residence of a retired army member.

The arrested was identified as Atikur Rahman, 37, a resident of Sher Ali Market area under Dhamsona union, who serves as the education affairs secretary of the Dhamsona union Awami League.

According to the case statement, filed by retired army sergeant Md Fazlul Haque, he has been living with his family in the South Gazirchat area since 2001 after purchasing land and building a house there.

The complaint alleges that Atikur Rahman and his associates had long been threatening and intimidating the family in an attempt to grab the property.

Situation escalated on the morning of January 30, when Atikur Rahman and members of an armed group allegedly entered the house and carried out an attack. Fazlul Haque, his wife, daughter and daughter-in-law were injured in the assault, the case document says.

During the attack, the assailants reportedly vandalised four CCTV cameras installed around the house, four electric meters in front of a shop and a submersible pump before setting them on fire.

A second attempt at arson was allegedly made late at night on February 11.

Based on his complaint, police conducted a drive in South Gazirchat area of Ashulia on Wednesday night and arrested Atikur.

Ashulia Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Rubel Hawladar confirmed the detention and said that the arrested has been sent to jail after being produced before the court on Thursday afternoon.
