A court in Naogaon has sentenced Md. Shamim Sardar to life imprisonment for killing his wife, Halima Khatun, reportedly over family disputes and her giving birth to a daughter.

He was also fined Tk 50,000, with an additional three months of simple imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.

Naogaon District and Sessions Judge and Special Tribunal-1 Judge Mohammad Rokonuzzaman delivered the verdict on Thursday (August 20).

According to the case documents, Shamim married Halima on August 28, 2017, in Dohali Kowalipara village of Mahadevpur upazila. The couple later lived in Dhaka. After Halima gave birth to a daughter, Shamim allegedly refused to accept the child and began neglecting his wife and daughter.

On December 27, 2019, Shamim took Halima from her family home to their village in Mahadevpur, Naogaon, after asking her family to send her there. When her family later tried to contact her by phone, Shamim reportedly gave various excuses, saying that she was busy.

Two days later, on December 29, police recovered Halima’s throat-slashed and injured body from a paddy field in Kishoripur under Tilakpur Union of Naogaon Sadar. Her family identified the body, which bore severe injuries to the throat, face and abdomen.

Police later learned that Shamim had gone into hiding following the recovery of Halima’s body. Her father subsequently filed a murder case with Naogaon Sadar Model Police Station, alleging that Shamim had killed her sometime between December 27 and 29 and abandoned her body in the field.

After investigation, charges were framed against Shamim under Sections 302 and 201 of the Penal Code on March 13, 2022. Following testimony from 14 of 23 witnesses, the court found the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt and delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused.

The case was conducted for the prosecution by District Public Prosecutor Advocate Md. Shahriar, while Advocate Md. Emran Hossain represented the accused.

Prosecutor Shahriar said the prosecution was satisfied with the verdict and that the victim’s family had received justice. He added that the ruling reinforced the rule of law.
