Once a seasonal stopover, Tirail, a village in Baraigram upazila of Natore district, has transformed into a sanctuary for migratory birds.

The area now hosts migratory birds year-round, filling the village with their calls and flights throughout the day and night.

Local residents have ensured a safe habitat by refraining from hunting, earning admiration from the birds themselves.

A field visit on Sunday revealed that approximately 12 bighas of bamboo groves and nearby trees near Tirail Bazar are now home to these migratory birds.

The sight of birds perching on trees, flying in flocks and moving freely across the area creates a visually striking scene. The birds arrive from Siberia in search of food and local residents and visitors alike are captivated by their presence.

Many of these birds only visited during winter and left with the onset of summer. However, many have been nesting in the area for almost a decade, laying eggs and raising chicks on bamboo and tree branches.

Locals from all walks of life become concerned as many species have already become extinct.

Rajshahi Wildlife and Nature Conservation Department inspector Jahangir Kabir praised the villagers’ efforts and said awareness campaigns and signage would be introduced to further protect the birds.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Laila Jannatul Ferdous expressed the upazila administration’s concern about the migratory birds and warned that anyone hunting them would face legal action.
