Police has registered a rape case against a man in Kurigram’s Bhurungamari upazila on Monday (August 17) for allegedly raping a speech-impaired woman.

The accused was identified as Shahadat Hossain, 40, son of late Main Uddin Sheikh of Beldah Ghantighar village under Paikerchhara union. He has a neighborly grandfatherly relation to the victim.

Local sources said Shahadat forcibly entered the victim's house on August 16 afternoon when no one was around. He gagged the 21-year-old divorced speech-impaired woman with a cloth and raped her inside her bedroom. He threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

Later, the victim informed her mother after recovering physically. She filed a complaint with Bhurungamari Police Station that night seeking justice. Police registered a case after finding truth in the allegation.

Union Parishad member Sirajul Islam Babu confirmed the incident and said the accused went into hiding right after the occurrence. He advised the victim's family to take legal steps.

Azim Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhurungamari Police Station, said a case was recorded on Monday. The accused remains at large. Efforts are underway to arrest him.
