Court freezes ex-GCC acting mayor Kiron’s 41 bank accounts

A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the freezing of 41 bank accounts belonging to former acting mayor of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC), Asadur Rahman (Kiron) and his family over corruption allegations. The accounts hold a total of Tk 37.3 lakh.

Judge Md Sabbir Foyez issued the order following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC Deputy Director Alamgir Hossain told the court that unusually large sums had been deposited in the accounts, raising suspicion that the funds were obtained through abuse of power and corruption.

ACC also warned the money could be withdrawn or transferred abroad if not frozen, prompting the court to grant the request.
