Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen met with LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at his office at Secretariat on Tuesday to discuss issues of mutual interest.

The meeting, attended by Local Government Division Secretary Md Rezaul Maksud Jahedi, focused on Bangladesh-China bilateral relations, including trade, investment and development partnerships.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the historic friendship and strategic cooperation between the two countries.

Key topics discussed included waste management, waste-to-energy generation, capacity building of city corporations, and the operationalisation of the Amin Bazar Water Treatment Plant.

The meeting also touched on China’s cooperation in developing Bangladesh’s local government sector.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mirza Fakhrul, who is also the BNP secretary general, highlighted that several Chinese-funded projects are currently underway in Bangladesh and that efforts are ongoing to expand cooperation further.

He said there was a detailed discussion on how China could provide greater support across various local government sectors.

On the long-standing Teesta River issue, the minister said China has expressed interest in cooperating on the project on its own initiative, though details will be shared only after a government policy decision is made.

Describing Bangladesh’s ties with China as historic, Mirza Fakhrul emphasized that China remains a major development partner and the relationship is expected to deepen further in the future.
