Govt moves to save energy: All universities shut from Monday

The government has announced that all public and private universities in the country will remain closed from Monday to observe Eid-ul-Fitr holiday early and conserve electricity amid the current global energy situation.

The Ministry of Education on Sunday issued a directive stating that, in line with the Cabinet Division’s instructions and to mark the holy month of Ramadan, all universities across the country will remain closed from March 9 until the scheduled Eid-ul-Fitr holiday in the academic calendar.

The decision aims to promote energy conservation at national level amid the ongoing global electricity and fuel challenges.

The ministry emphasized that universities must adopt responsible and efficient use of electricity and fuel. During daylight hours, electrical lighting should be avoided whenever adequate natural light is available, with windows and doors kept open to make the most of sunlight.

It was also advised to use only half of the existing lighting when necessary.

The directive further instructed universities to avoid unnecessary use of electrical appliances such as lights, fans, air conditioners and other devices during office hours.

Air conditioners, if used, should be set to 25 degrees Celsius or higher. After office hours, all electrical equipment, including lights, fans, computers, printers, scanners and air conditioners, must be switched off.

Additionally, unnecessary decorative lighting should be avoided and the use of vehicles should be limited.

The move is part of a broader effort to ensure electricity and fuel savings while maintaining essential services and academic schedules.
