NARAYANGANJ, Mar 12: Narayanganj City Corporation, in collaboration with the environmental organisation Practical Action, organised a two-day awareness programme on March 11-12 to promote proper plastic waste management and environmental protection.

Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony held on March 12 in the Narayanganj City Corporation conference room, City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain Khan said, the Shitalakkhya River was once so clean that its water was compared to coconut water.

Many residents even drank directly from the river about 30-35 years ago. However, due to severe pollution, the river has now become foul-smelling, and fish resources have nearly disappeared.

He noted that even 10-15 years ago fishermen could still catch fish from the river, but the situation has deteriorated significantly. "We must work together to restore the river to its previous condition," he said.

The event was chaired by Md. Nur Kutubul Alam, Chief Executive Officer of Narayanganj City Corporation, while Ishrat Shabnam, Country Director of Practical Action, attended as special guest. The program was moderated by city planner Moinul Islam.

For nearly three decades, Practical Action has been working to strengthen community resilience to climate change, environmental degradation, and pollution while promoting sustainable waste management practices.

As part of the initiative, an awareness meeting was held with sanitation workers on the first day. Essay writing, drawing, and photography competitions were also organised for students at Narayanganj City Park to raise awareness about waste management. Four waste bins were installed in the park as part of the campaign.

Ishrat Shabnam highlighted the growing threat of micro-plastic pollution, noting that plastic particles are now being found in fish, human fetuses, and even in the human brain. She stressed the importance of reducing plastic use and promoting recycling.

Organisers said Practical Action will continue working across the country to ensure proper plastic use and effective waste management to protect the environment for future generations.
