Journalist Anis Alamgir was released from Kashimpur Central Jail on Saturday afternoon after serving nearly three months in custody in connection with a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission.
Prison authorities said he was released from Kashimpur Central Jail Part-2 in Gazipur at around 2:35pm after completion of formalities related to his bail order.
Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail Part-2 Md Al Mamun confirmed the development, saying that the necessary documents reached the jail in the previous night.
"The necessary documents for Anis Alamgir's bail reached the jail on Friday night. After completing the verification process he was officially released this afternoon," he said.
Family members, including his wife and relatives, were present at the jail gate during his release.
The case against Anis Alamgir was filed by Anti Corruption Commission Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman on January 15 at the ACC Integrated District Office 1 in Dhaka under Section 27(1) of the Anti Corruption Commission Act.
According to the case statement, an inquiry by the anti graft watchdog found discrepancies between the journalist's declared income and his alleged assets.
Investigators claimed Anis Alamgir possesses assets worth about Tk 4 crore 25 lakh, while his latest income tax return shows net assets of Tk 57 lakh 99 thousand.
Based on this discrepancy, the ACC alleged that he "acquired assets worth about Tk 3.68 crore beyond his known sources of income and concealed the information in the asset declaration submitted to the authorities."
The court granted him bail in the case on Wednesday. Earlier on January 28, the court had shown him arrested in the ACC case during the course of proceedings.
Anis Alamgir was earlier detained on December 14 last year when law enforcement personnel picked him up from a gymnasium in Dhanmondi in the capital and took him to the Detective Branch office in Minto Road for questioning.
Subsequently, another case was filed against him under the Anti Terrorism Act.
According to police records, Revolutionary Alliance central organiser Aryan Ahmed filed the case at Uttara Paschim Police Station in July last year. In that case, Anis Alamgir was named as an accused along with actresses Meher Afroz Shaon and Maria Kispatta and cultural activist Imtu Ratish.
