Law enforcement agencies have put in place stringent, round-the-clock security measures across Dhaka as millions of residents leave the capital to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, raising concerns over the safety of largely vacant neighborhoods.
With an estimated 15 million people expected to depart the city during the holiday period, authorities fear a potential rise in crimes such as theft, burglary, and mugging.
In response, multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), have intensified patrols and surveillance to ensure public safety.
RAB-10 Commanding Officer Mohammad Kamruzzaman said the force has been maintaining continuous security across the capital, particularly in residential areas that become vulnerable during the mass exodus.
"During Eid, many homes remain empty, and incidents of burglary and mugging tend to increase. To prevent this, we have strengthened patrols, especially at night, in less crowded neighborhoods," he said after inspecting the Sadarghat launch terminal on Tuesday.
He added that strict monitoring is also in place at major transport hubs, including Sadarghat and Sayedabad bus terminal, to prevent passenger harassment and overcharging during the Eid rush. A 24-hour RAB control room will remain operational, and passengers have been urged to report any irregularities via hotline for immediate action.
Echoing similar concerns, Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
"Repeated presence of unknown individuals, unusual motorcycle movement, or sudden congestion in neighborhoods may indicate security risks," he said, emphasizing that police are on duty round the clock to ensure safety.
He noted that police, intelligence agencies, and other law enforcement bodies are working in coordination despite challenges posed by limited manpower. Citizens have been encouraged to cooperate by reporting concerns to nearby police station or through the national emergency helpline 999.
