Eid holiday road toll reaches 204 dead as safety crisis persists

A preliminary death toll of 204 people and more than 600 injuries across 264 traffic accidents has emerged from Bangladesh's Eid-ul-Fitr travel period, according to the Road Safety Foundation.

The alarming figures underscore persistent dangers facing motorists during one of the nation's most congested travel windows.

Data collected between March 17 and March 24 (noon) remain incomplete, as holiday journeys continue through March 28.

The Road Safety Foundation plans to release comprehensive final statistics during an April 4 press conference.

Saidur Rahman, the foundation's executive director, told Dhaka Tribune that casualty numbers were compiled through multiple verification channels including newspaper reports, hospital admissions, social media posts, police records, and field observations conducted by the organization itself.

"Every figure undergoes foundation verification," Rahman explained, noting that fresh accidents occur daily and casualty counts will likely climb before the travel season concludes.

The director observed that motorcycle accident fatalities might have reached even higher levels had recent fuel shortages not discouraged two-wheeler usage across the country.

Devastating multi-vehicle incidents characterized the holiday period. The second day of Eid witnessed 28 fatalities from road crashes alone. During Eid day itself, at least 10 people died and 25 suffered injuries across separate accidents spanning eight districts.

Historical comparisons reveal troubling patterns. Last year's 11-day Eid-ul-Fitr travel period produced 249 deaths and 553 injuries from 257 accidents. Those casualties included 41 women and 59 children, suggesting vulnerable populations face disproportionate risks during holiday movements.

Despite this year's data covering a comparatively shorter timeframe, escalating accident numbers indicate that systemic road safety vulnerabilities persist during mass migration periods. The Road Safety Foundation cautioned that final casualty counts will substantially exceed current preliminary figures.

Officials attributed the ongoing crisis to deficient traffic management systems, inadequate enforcement mechanisms, and insufficient road safety awareness campaigns. These institutional gaps become particularly pronounced when millions of travelers overwhelm transportation networks during holiday periods.

The complete April report is expected to establish the full scope of this year's Eid-related road tragedy and provide comparative analysis with previous years' incidents.
