In a sporting landscape often shaped by fierce rivalries and political undertones, Mohammedan Sporting Club delivered a rare and timely message of unity during a high-profile event held at its Motijheel premises on Tuesday.

The occasion was attended by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The permanent member of the club exchanged greetings with the newly elected board of directors, permanent members, officials and players of the club.

The defining moment of the event, however, came when Mohammedan extended an invitation to Anjan Chowdhury Pintu, a director of arch-rivals Dhaka Abahani Limited, and honoured him as a special guest on the stage. In a context where club affiliations are often perceived to mirror political alignments, with Mohammedan commonly associated with nationalist circles and Abahani linked to the Awami mimded people. This gesture carried considerable symbolic significance.

Such an instance of cross-club goodwill has been largely absent from the country's sporting scene for over a decade. By welcoming a senior figure from their fiercest rivals, Mohammedan appeared to transcend entrenched divisions and underline the broader unifying power of sport.

The event featured speeches from several prominent figures, including Director-in-Charge Lokman Hossain Bhuiyan, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Shariful Alam, State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque, Civil Aviation and Tourism State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, Member of Parliament Monirul Haque Chowdhury, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, and senior BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. The proceedings were chaired by club president and Noakhali-3 MP Mohammad Barkat Ullah Bulu.

In his remarks, Rizvi referred to an incident from recent years, alluding to Shakib Al Hasan. He stated that a prominent cricketer had once expressed interest in joining the BNP but was ultimately unable to do so. According to Rizvi, the initial communication had been made through BNP leader Nipun Roy Chowdhury.

Rizvi also praised State Minister Aminul Haque, recalling his leadership of the national team and commending his current role in overseeing the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Among others present were Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajol and State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Habibur Rashid Habib, adding further prominence to the gathering.
