The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Thursday sentenced former assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain and ex-constable Sujan Chandra Roy to death in a crimes against humanity case filed over killing of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, during the July uprising.
Three other police members are also given life term imprisonment in the same case. They are former Assistant Commissioner of Police Md Arifuzzaman, former Inspector (unarmed) Robiul Islam, and former Sub-Inspector (unarmed) Bibhutibhushan Roy.
The verdict was delivered by the three-member ICT-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Manjurul Bached and Justice Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
A total of 30 suspects had been accused in the case. The others received jail sentences in different terms.
In the verdict, the tribunal sentenced BRUR teachers Mashiur Rahman and Asaduzzaman Mondol to 10 years' imprisonment. It also handed a 10-year sentence to Pomel Barua, former president of the banned Chhatra League unit at the university, alongwith three-year prison terms for five other leaders.
Abu Sayeed, a brilliant student of Begum Rokeya University and the first martyr of the July uprising, was brutally killed in police firing in front of the university on July 16, 2024.
On June 30, 2025, the ICT took cognisance of charges against 30 people, including former BRUR vice chancellor Hasibur Rashid and former Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) commissioner Md Moniruzzaman.
They face charges of murder, attempted murder, superior command responsibility, abetment, and complicity in crimes against humanity.
The ICT investigation agency submitted a charge sheet against them on June 24, 2025. Of the 30 accused, 24 are absconding while six are behind bars. Those who are in custody are former assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain and former constable Sujan Chandra Roy, former BRUR proctor Shariful Islam, banned Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury, Rafiul Hasan Russel and Anwar Pervez.
