15 injured in stampede at Narsingdi prayer event

At least 15 people, including a child, were injured in a stampede during a prayer event at Bhagirathpur village under Madhabdi of Narsingdi Sadar upazila on Friday. 

According to local sources,  almost 8,000 to 10,000 people came to the event which was organized at the Bhagirathpur Haji Lal Mia Molla High School playground to mark the prayer event of Lal Mia Molla, father of industrialist Abdul Momen Molla. 

Some of the injured have been identified as Abdul Mannan ,60, Afaz Uddin ,55, Kadir Mia,30, Suman Ahmed, 25, Zakaria, 15 and Ibrahim, 5. 

Eyewitnesses said that immediately after Jum'a prayers, the school gate was opened, prompting a large crowd to rush in simultaneously causing the injury of 15 people.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Dr. Farida Gulshan Ara Kabir, Residential Medical Officer (RMO) at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said that four injured were admitted there and one critically injured patient was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asma Jahan Sarkar stated that no prior permission had been taken for organizing the event at the school playground.
She was not initially aware of the incident, she confirmed.

Officer in-Charge (OC) of Madhabdi Police Station Md Kamal Hossain said that police rushed to the scene after being informed and brought the situation under control. 

He added that legal action would be taken if any complaint is filed.
