Italy rejects suggestion to replace Iran at World Cup

Italian authorities have firmly dismissed a proposal that Italy could take Iran’s place in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, calling the idea both unfeasible and inappropriate.

Officials in Italy responded after Paolo Zampolli reportedly suggested to Donald Trump and Gianni Infantino that Italy could step in if Iran withdrew from the tournament.

Zampolli described the idea as a contingency plan rather than a political move.

However, Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi rejected the notion outright, saying it was “not possible” and “not a good idea.”

Luciano Buonfiglio echoed the sentiment, stressing that teams must earn their place through qualification.

Iran has not withdrawn from the World Cup and is preparing to compete in matches scheduled in the United States.

FIFA has confirmed that the tournament schedule remains unchanged.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Iranian players would likely be allowed entry, though concerns remain about non-athlete members of the delegation.

Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, Iran’s participation stands, with officials reiterating their commitment to competing in the tournament.
