Moroccan woman footballer dies attempting sea crossing to Spain

A 20-year-old Moroccan woman footballer died while attempting to cross the sea to Spain's autonomous city of Ceuta in search of a better future, leaving the country's football community in mourning.
Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a midfielder for Moroccan club Maghreb Athletic Tetouan's women's team, drowned after being swept away by strong currents while attempting the dangerous sea crossing to Ceuta, Moroccan sports website Al Botola reported.
The tragedy occurred amid the ongoing migration crisis along the Morocco-Ceuta border, where thousands of migrants have recently attempted to reach the Spanish enclave by sea or by crossing the border in hopes of securing a better life. Many have lost their lives during these perilous journeys, according to international media reports.
Before joining Maghreb Athletic Tetouan, Faten also played for Morocco Athletic Tangier. She was regarded as one of the country's promising young women's footballers.
In a statement, Maghreb Athletic Tetouan said Faten did not undertake the risky journey in search of fame or adventure but was driven by the hope of building a better future and starting a new life across the border.
Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief across Morocco's sporting community, with teammates, coaches and fellow athletes remembering her for her humility, professionalism and dedication to the game.
The Moroccan Professional Footballers' Union also expressed its condolences to Faten's family, teammates and club, pledging its support during this difficult time and praying for her soul and for strength for her loved ones.
Faten's death has come to symbolize the human cost of irregular migration, highlighting the risks faced by many young people seeking better opportunities abroad.
