Govt reiterates ban on media coverage of Sheikh Hasina

Government has reiterated its call to all media outlets regarding broadcast of statements or speeches of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Former PM is accused in July-August genocide cases at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Due to that, government has urged the media to strictly follow the directives of the tribunal.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a statement on Tuesday regarding the matter. Ministry noted that ICT previously banned publication and broadcast of Sheikh Hasina’s statements in mainstream media and on social media platforms.

The tribunal also directed Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ICT Division and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commision (BTRC) to prevent the dissemination of her statements.

The statement mentioned that the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) requested the media to refrain from broadcasting statements by convicted or accused individuals to protect national security and uphold relevant laws.

The government expressed deep concern that while most media houses respected the court order and the spirit of the July Uprising; a few outlets were still broadcasting her speeches.

The ministry stated that the government deeply respects the spirit of the July Uprising and the sacrifices of martyrs. It expressed sincere gratitude to media outlets that refrained from publishing her statements.

The government urged all television channels, newspapers, online news portals, and social media platforms to strictly follow the ICT order.

The government expressed hope that all national media outlets would continue to play a responsible and united role in upholding national unity and the spirit of the July Uprising.
