Security enhanced at 8 airports amid possible militant attack

Authorities have intensified security in eight airports, including Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, following intelligence warnings of potential militant attacks on key national installations.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) confirmed the heightened alert on Monday.

CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md Mostafa Mahmud Siddiq verified the development, stating that surveillance has been significantly ramped up in response to the recent security risks.

Following a formal alert from the Police Headquarters, the aviation authority immediately instructed all law enforcement units at the airports to implement special security measures.

Extra uniformed and plainclothes personnel have been deployed at critical entry points, terminal areas, and sensitive zones.

Authorities have also intensified security screenings for both arriving and departing passengers, instructing all airport staff to immediately report any suspicious activities.

The aviation authority's swift response is part of a broader nationwide alert. The Police Headquarters recently issued a directive to all regional and district police chiefs, ordering tightened security at key state properties.

Intelligence reports suggest that supporters of a banned extremist outfit are planning coordinated acts of sabotage.

According to the police alert, intelligence agencies intercepted regular communications between a recently arrested extremist, Istiaq Ahmed Sami, and two dismissed members of a state security force.

The group is suspected of plotting attacks on high-profile targets, including the National Parliament, law enforcement facilities, places of worship, recreational centers, and key intersections like Shahbagh in the capital.

Intelligence indicates the attackers might utilize explosives, firearms, or locally made sharp weapons. There are also concerns that the group could attempt to target armories belonging to various security forces.

Describing the suspects as a severe threat to national security, multiple law enforcement officials confirmed that intelligence gathering has been scaled up nationwide. Operations are currently underway to preempt any sabotage attempts and apprehend the remaining conspirators.
