A day-long cleanliness drive was carried out in Laxmipur district to raise awareness and prevent mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue and chikungunya.

The campaign, organised by BRAC, took place across different areas of the municipality on Tuesday morning.

Municipal Nirbahi Officer Khan Mohammad Farabi inaugurated the program, while WHO representative Dr Mahtab Taha attended as a special guest.

During the campaign, volunteers cleaned potential mosquito breeding sites and raised awareness among local residents.

Fogging operations were also conducted to control mosquitoes, while public announcements were made across the municipality to disseminate dengue prevention messages and necessary guidelines.

Speaking at the event, Khan Mohammad Farabi said climate change has increased various health risks, adding that maintaining a clean environment is essential to prevent the spread of dengue.

He stressed that eliminating mosquito breeding grounds remains the most effective way to control dengue and chikungunya.

Dr Mahtab Taha highlighted different types and symptoms of dengue and advised people to undergo NS1 antigen testing at the general hospital at an early stage if symptoms appear.

He also urged all to ensure regular cleanliness at homes, business organisations and offices so that mosquitoes couldn't breed in clean water.

BRAC Tuberculosis Control Program district manager Dr MA Baten, program manager Shimul Majumdar, Climate Change and Health project officer Tarequzzaman and municipal conservancy inspector Faez Ahmed were present, among others.
