Case filed against 71 over BCL bike showdown in Cox’s Bazar

Police have filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act against 71 leaders and activists of the banned student organization Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), alongside its affiliate organizations Juba-league, and Awami League.
They were sued following a motorcycle showdown in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The lawsuit named 31 individuals, while 30 to 40 unnamed persons were also made accused in the case.
According to the case statement, the accused attempted to instigate public panic and engage in anti-state activities by chanting anti-government slogans while carrying banners featuring the photograph of Sheikh Hasina and the slogan, "Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile."
Meanwhile, the Ramu upazila unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) brought out a protest rally and held a meeting condemning the incident.
The simultaneous showdown in Ramu and a Chhatra League activist gathering in Ukhiya's Palongkhali have sparked renewed political tensions across the district.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), police received information at around 11:30AM on July 26 that leaders and activists of the banned BCL, along with Awami League and its associate bodies were holding an anti-government program.
The FIR stated that under the direction of Cox’s Bazar District BCL President S M Saddam Hossain, and led by Ramu Upazila BCL Joint Conveners Tareq Uddin Mishuk and Ershadul Kausar Sakib, activists staged a motorcycle showdown and procession on the highway in front of the Zamzam Filling Station in East Murapara under Joarianala.
It further noted that participants in the rally carried banners with Sheikh Hasina’s image, festoons, and wooden sticks while chanting anti-government slogans, attempting to spread fear among the public.
Police claimed that when a team arrived at the scene around 12:00PM, the demonstrators fled on their motorcycles, leaving behind banners, sticks, and brickbats. Officers seized a banner, 13 wooden sticks, and 19 pieces of brickbats from the spot, preparing a seizure list in the presence of three local witnesses.
Among the named accused are District BCL President S M Saddam Hossain, Ramu Upazila BCL Joint Conveners Tareq Uddin Mishuk and Ershadul Kausar Sakib, Robiul Hasan Riyad, Md Jahed, Inzamam Ahmad Ramim, Borhan Uddin, Sajjadul Haq Rony, Shakil Adnan, Shaheen Sarwar Kajol, Delwar Hasan Nayan, Md Yunus Bhutto, Iftekhar Uddin Shuvo, Khalekuzzaman Khokon, Zidanul Islam, Adanur Rashid Pardin, Tanvir Hossain Sourav, Raju, Riduwanul Haq, Osman Gani, Ashik, Mubinul Hasan Nayan, Abu Bakkar, Rashed Ali, Saddam Hossain, Ershad Ullah, Imad Shikder, Imran Khan, Azizul Haq, Md Tareq, and Nurul Absar alias Nurul Azim.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramu Police Station, Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, told reporters that drives are underway to arrest the accused and identify the unnamed suspects.
