Government has approved the formation of five new upazilas, along with Bogura City Corporation, at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR).
The decisions were taken at the 120th NICAR meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday afternoon.
According to the decision, Bogura City Corporation has been formed, while five new upazilas have also been created by reorganising existing administrative areas. These include Mokamtola from Shibganj upazila of Bogura, Matamuhuri from Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar, Ruhia and Bhulli from Sadar upazila of Thakurgaon, and Chandraganj from Sadar upazila of Lakshmipur.
With this decision, Bogura becomes the country’s 13th city corporation, joining the existing 12 city corporations, including Dhaka North, Dhaka South, Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi, Barishal, Sylhet, Rangpur, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Cumilla and Mymensingh.
Officials said Bangladesh currently has 495 upazilas under 64 districts, through which local administration implements government development programmes and directives at the field level.
Previously, the latest upazilas to be formed were Dasar in Madaripur, Eidgaon in Cox’s Bazar and Madhyanagar in Sunamganj.
