Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is ready to act on allegations of extortion if concrete evidence is provided, following claims by the Leader of the Opposition that illegal collections are driving up commodity prices.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday after a meeting at the Secretariat, the minister addressed concerns over rising market costs and security arrangements ahead of Eid ul Azha.

The meeting also reviewed law and order, safety at sacrificial cattle markets and overall preparations for the festival.

“If the Opposition Leader has specific records showing increased extortion, he can submit them to me, or journalists can provide the information. Once we receive clear details, we will take action,” Salahuddin said.

Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat e Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman recently alleged that extortion is contributing to higher prices of essential goods. After visiting the Shah Ali wholesale market in Mirpur-1 in Dhaka, he said traders had complained about silent extortion and unusually high shop rents.

According to traders cited by the opposition leader, government market shops officially rented for Tk 5000 are allegedly being sublet for up to Tk 150000, placing heavy financial pressure on businesses. Some traders reportedly expressed fear about naming those involved in the alleged practices.

Dr Shafiqur urged collective resistance against extortion and pledged support for traders willing to speak out.

Responding to these claims, Salahuddin reiterated that the authorities would move swiftly if specific locations and individuals were identified. He noted that a nationwide special drive has been underway since April 30 targeting extortionists, terrorists, armed criminals, drug traffickers and illegal gambling operations.

The minister said law enforcement agencies have been instructed to prioritise the arrest of drug dealers and illegal arms holders. Police Headquarters, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and district superintendents have been directed to submit regular progress reports on the ongoing operations.

The government maintains that maintaining market stability and public security remains a top priority as the country prepares for the upcoming religious festival.
