Families of the six newborns who died at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in the capital's Moghbazar area on Wednesday morning took the bodies without autopsy after receiving police permission, officials said.

Ramna Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ashiq Iqbal said the families collected the bodies following police approval.

Meanwhile, a high-level probe committee has been formed to investigate the deaths of the six newborns.

The committee will examine whether there was any negligence in hospital management, shortcomings in treatment and whether there were any environmental issues in the room where the newborns were kept, said Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Dr Prabhat Chandra Biswas.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within 72 hours, he said, adding that the government would take strict action based on the findings.

Earlier on Wednesday morning, six newborns died at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar under circumstances that prompted authorities to launch an investigation.
