Ziaur Rahman was a proponent of democracy: MP Jahandar Ali

SHIBCHAR, MADARIPUR, June 5: A prayer and discussion meeting was held in Shibchar of Madaripur, marking the 45th death anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. 

The programme was attended by Madaripur-2 MP and Member Secretary of the district BNP, Jahandar Ali Mia, as the chief guest.

According to organisers, the event was arranged by the Shibchar Upazila and municipal units of BNP, along with its associate bodies, at the Ambia Hakimia Darul Ulum Orphanage Madrasa grounds on Friday noon. District BNP Convener Advocate Jafar Ali Mia attended as the chief speaker.

The meeting was chaired by Shibchar Upazila BNP Convener Shahadat Hossain Khan and moderated by Member Secretary Sohel Rana. Among others, District BNP Joint Convener Mizanur Rahman Murad, BNP-nominated candidate for Madaripur-1 in the 13th parliamentary election Nadira Akter, Jubo Dal Assistant General Secretary Bashar Siddiqui, Upazila BNP member Motahar Hawlader, Municipal BNP Convener Abul Kalam Mallik, Senior Joint Convener Hemayet Hossain Khan and Member Secretary Azmal Hossain Khan Selim addressed the gathering.

Speaking at the programme, Jahandar Ali Mia described Ziaur Rahman as a "proponent of democracy" and said the Sheed President Ziaur Rahman had played a significant role in the country's political history.

He also criticised political opponents and defended Ziaur Rahman's legacy, rejecting allegations made against him Jahandar Ali Mia further claimed that Honourable Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had taken initiatives to address various public concerns within a short period, including the introduction of family and farmer cards, support for students through school uniforms, and canal excavation programmes aimed at improving water management and irrigation facilities.
