Rallies to create awareness against mosquito-borne disease Dengue were held in Feni and Gaibandha districts in two days.

FENI: The district administration and Health Department in Feni on Saturday organised a dengue awareness rally and a special cleanliness campaign to promote preventive measures against the mosquito-borne disease.

Feni Deputy Commissioner (DC) Monira Haque attended the programme as the chief guest.

The event began at around 11:30 am on the premises of Feni 250-Bed General Hospital. A rally started from the hospital's administrative building and proceeded to the Sadar Hospital intersection, where participants distributed leaflets among the public to raise awareness about dengue prevention.

The programme concluded with a brief gathering in front of the hospital's administrative building.

The event was presided over by Civil Surgeon and Superintendent of Feni 250-Bed General Hospital Dr Rubaiyat Bin Karim.

Among those present were Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Shafiqul Islam, Additional DC (General) Md Al Amin Sarkar, Bangladesh Doctors Association (DAB) General Secretary Mobarak Hossain Dulal, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Rukunuzzaman, as well as doctors, nurses, and officials and employees of the district administration and health department.

Speaking at the programme, Dr Rubaiyat said public awareness remains the key to preventing dengue.

"We must be aware ourselves if we want to protect ourselves from dengue. Prevention is possible if we keep our surroundings clean. Everyone has to come forward and play their part," he said.

Addressing the gathering, DC Monira Haque said dengue, unlike Covid-19, does not have a widely available preventive vaccination programme that can be relied upon for community protection, making prevention efforts crucial.

"To prevent dengue, we must focus on preventive measures. Stagnant water around homes and public places provides a suitable breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes. Waste and garbage are often left unattended in our surroundings. Therefore, drainage systems must remain functional, and our environment must be kept clean," she said.

She also urged families to remain vigilant and take responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings.
