Four children drowned in separate incidents in Bhola Sadar Upazila of Bhola and Nageshwari Upazila of Kurigram on Monday.

BHOLA:  Two children aged three and one drowned in ponds in separate incidents in Bapta and Alinagar unions under Sadar Upazila around noon.

The deceased were Mohammad Abdullah, 3, son of Mohammad Shafik of Ward 5 of Bapta Union, and Abdur Rahman, 1, son of Mohammad Suman of Ward 5 of Alinagar Union.

According to family members and locals, Abdullah was playing in the yard of his house while his mother was busy with household chores. At one point, the family members could not find him and began searching for him.

Later, they found him floating in a pond beside the house. Locals rescued him and took him to Bhola 250-bed General Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.

In the other incident, Abdur Rahman was left at home while his mother went to a neighbour's house. The child crawled out of the house while looking for his mother and fell into a pond beside the house.

Neighbours later found him in the water and took him to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Mohammad Monirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhola Sadar Model Police Station (PS), confirmed the two deaths.

He said the bodies were handed over to the families without autopsy after completion of legal procedures, as the families did not file any complaints.

KURIGRAM: Two cousins drowned in a pond in Nageshwari Upazila of Kurigram around 11am on Monday.

The deceased were Siam, 8, son of Mominur Islam of Char Bishnupur village, and Mofassira, 7, daughter of Dulal Hossain of Khamar Village.

The two children had gone with their families to visit their maternal grandmother Latifa Khatun's house in Dhluabari Village under Kedar Union.

According to locals, they went unnoticed to a pond beside the house in the morning to catch fish using a torn mosquito net as a makeshift net. They drowned while fishing.

Around 1pm, locals saw Siam's body floating in the pond and informed the family. Family members and locals later recovered Siam's body and found Mofassira's body underwater.

Kachakata PS OC Arpan Kumar Das confirmed the incident and said police had been sent to the spot.
