A trawler was capsized after being hit by a Dhaka-bound passenger launch, Sundarban-12, near Shyambazar Ghat in the capital’s Sadarghat.

Eight of the 10 people boarding the trawler managed to survive, but two remain missing. The accident took place around 8:30AM on Sunday (July 19).

Sadarghat River Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sohag Rana told that the brand-new trawler was being taken from Kaddabazar in Gazipur to Muradnagar in Cumilla.

Upon reaching the Sadarghat area, the propeller of the trawler got stuck in something. The engine shut down, leaving the vessel stranded in the middle of the river. At that moment, the Sundarban-12 launch, arriving from Barishal, hit the trawler, causing it to sink.

On information, a fire service rescue team, including divers, rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.

Fire Service Official Anwarul Islam Dolon said, ‘Eight out of the ten people on the trawler swam to safety or managed to reach the shore. The fire service diver team is conducting a search operation to rescue the two missing individuals.’
