BOGURA, June 29: Heavy monsoon rain inundated large parts of the Bogura town on Monday, leaving major roads submerged and causing widespread water-logging that disrupted normal life.
According to the Bogura Meteorological Office, the district recorded 67.6mm of rainfall between 9:20am and 2pm. The downpour brought relief from the intense heat and humid weather that had prevailed over the past several days but also exposed the town's persistent drainage problems.
Continuous rainfall from dawn until the afternoon left many roads under knee- to waist-deep water. Major roads, including Satmatha, Kazi Nazrul Islam Road, Sherpur Road, Park Road, Rahman Nagar, Station Road, Khandar Road, Galapatti, Temple Road, Fateh Ali Bazar, Chakyadu, Katnarpara and Borogola, went under water.
Overflowing drains clogged with waste spilled onto roads and entered nearby homes in several neighbourhoods.
Residents blamed the recurring water-logging on the lack of a planned drainage system, alleging that neither the former municipality nor the newly formed city corporation had undertaken adequate infrastructure development over the past 19 years. They said poor drainage prevents rainwater from flowing out, causing severe water-logging after every heavy shower.
The situation caused significant suffering for students, office-goers and commuters, with traffic movement disrupted in many parts of the town.
Selim Reza, a resident of Badurtala, said water accumulates on Chakyadu Road after every rainfall because of inadequate drainage.
"Today's rain left the road under waist-deep water, making movement almost impossible," he said.
Officials of the Bogura City Corporation said drains had already been repaired in some areas and steps would be taken to address the remaining problem spots as quickly as possible.
However, local residents argued that temporary drain cleaning would not provide a lasting solution, stressing that only a comprehensive and planned drainage system could permanently resolve the city's chronic water-logging problem.
