KU canteen worker confesses to filming in women’s dormitory

KHULNA, July 24: A canteen worker at Khulna University (KU) has confessed before a court to secretly recording videos inside the washroom of a women's residential hall, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Imam Hasan, a canteen worker at Bijoy '24 Hall, was arrested along with his wife, Rupamoni, after female students allegedly caught him attempting to film inside the washroom by placing a mobile phone through a ventilator late Wednesday night.

According to police, a case has been filed over the incident. Harintana Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Helal Uddin said Imam was produced before a court, where he gave a confessional statement. He was later sent to jail after receiving treatment at the prison cell of Khulna Medical College Hospital for injuries sustained when he was assaulted by angry students following the incident.

The incident sparked widespread protests on the campus. Students boycotted all academic and administrative activities on Thursday and formed a human chain, demanding exemplary punishment for those responsible. They announced that classes and examinations would remain suspended until justice is ensured.

In response, the university authorities cancelled the allocation of the hall canteen, prohibited hall employees from carrying or using mobile phones inside the dormitory and formed a three-member investigation committee. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three days.

Professor Dr Selina Ahmed, provost of Bijoy '24 Hall, said the accused was handed over to police along with the mobile phone allegedly used to record the videos.

Acting Director of Student Affairs Associate Professor Md Tarek Bin Salam said the university administration would determine further action after consulting with students and reviewing the findings of the investigation committee.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Rezaul Karim said the university would not tolerate such incidents and assured that anyone found responsible would face strict action in accordance with the law and university regulations.
