A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent television actor Zaheer Alvi, whose real name is Md. Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, to jail after the completion of his two-day remand in a case over the alleged abetment of his wife Ikra’s suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the order after the hearing.
The investigation officer, Inspector Abdul Malek of the Detective Branch (DB) Police’s Mirpur Zonal Team, produced Alvi before the court and sought an order to keep him in custody until the investigation is completed. The prosecution said investigators obtained important information during the remand and that preliminary findings indicated the actor’s involvement in the incident.
The complainant’s lawyer, Abzal Hossain Mridha, said no bail petition was filed on Alvi’s behalf after his remand ended, prompting the court to send him to jail. He added that the complainant had requested the court to bring anyone else found involved under the scope of the investigation.
Alvi surrendered before the court on June 18 and was denied bail before being sent to jail. The DB later secured a two-day remand for interrogation. His mother, Nasrin Sultana Shyuli, also an accused in the case, surrendered on June 4 and was granted bail.
