BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed on Tuesday night drew powerful emotional imagery linking the 2024 July-August mass uprising martyrs to global landmarks, saying he had “seen Abu Sayed’s chest instead of the Great Wall of China.”
Speaking at a programme titled “Aloy Aloy Smriti Somujjol” organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at the Central Shaheed Minar, Rizvi said the July-August movement marked the peak of a 17-year struggle against what he described as authoritarian rule.
“I have not seen the Great Wall of China, but I have seen Abu Sayed’s chest, standing like a wall while facing bullets,” he said, adding that he had not seen the Himalayas but had seen “Wasim Akram standing like a mountain and receiving bullets,” and had not seen the Pacific Ocean but had witnessed “the tears of Ahnaf’s mother.”
The event was held at the first hour of Wednesday as part of a month-long programme marking the second anniversary of the mass uprising.
Rizvi urged continued remembrance of the slain protesters, saying the light of their sacrifice must remain active every day to resist authoritarianism.
He alleged that remnants of “fascist rule” still exist in society and accused the previous government of corruption and misuse of state resources, including infrastructure projects.
He also praised BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, saying his leadership reflects a broader nationalist ethos, even extending to civic discipline such as obeying traffic signals.
Senior leaders of Chhatra Dal, including its president and general secretary, along with Dhaka University unit leaders, attended the programme.
